Teaching with heart and technology: Workshops to address how AI meets human-centered learning – News

The rapid development in artificial intelligence might feel daunting to respond to in the classroom, but the Adaptive Edge Institute, in partnership with the Center for Integrated Professional Development, will continue a series of AI-focused professional development sessions to address the top challenges and opportunities presented to Illinois State University instructors.

Back by popular demand, the series, “Gladly We Learn, Teach, and Research with AI,” first ran this past fall. After its first iteration, more than 90% of participants recommended the sessions to colleagues.

This spring, the series returns to feature eight sessions with brand new topics. Instructors have the option to join any and all of the sessions virtually on Mondays or in person on Wednesdays in Stevenson Hall. New this semester, participants who attend one session all eight weeks will receive a certificate of completion.

Session topics include:

  • Human-centered AI for inclusive teaching (February 9 and 11)
  • Designing AI-resilient learning activities (February 16 and 18)
  • AI and cognitive load: Supporting student thinking (February 23 and 25)
  • Ethical decision-making with AI (March 2 and 4)
  • AI as a research partner (March 16 and 18)
  • Data-informed reflection with AI (March 23 and 25)
  • Collaborative knowledge-building with AI (March 30 and April 1)
  • AI futures in higher education (April 6 and 8)

When asked why instructors should register, Assistant Director for Scholarly Teaching and Learning David Giovagnoli said, “While we’ve been running workshops related to AI for several years now, this series offers faculty and staff the opportunity to do a deep dive into how AI could, should, or should not impact their work at the University. This is a chance to think deeply about what adaptations can be made in research and teaching to meet this moment we’re all in.”

With a focus on practical strategies and applications, the series will help participants navigate challenges and explore new possibilities for artificial intelligence in ways that align with their values and goals.
